A Complete Beginner's Money Making Guide for the First 10hrs

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:38 AM PST

I bought the game in September on XB1 and have had a number of slots and restarts. Here are things I found that would've been useful to know as a new player starting out. The big thing for me is trying to play as a lavish trading billionaire so combat and exploration aren't the big things for me. It's about getting the most units, and the best kit.

Before you read on there are loads of guides on how to earn units and they are just to inconsistent. There are three things which I want to avoid:

    • If you're starting out, and looking for ways to make money you're going to see loads of YouTube videos telling you "how to make 4 trillion units in 36 seconds... but you need to start with 2.3 billion credits..."

    • The other good one is, it's easy to make 2 million units in 5 mins, just craft this thing and sell it - but you need to have found this blueprint" There will absolutely be blueprints that will let you craft valuable items - worth more than the sum of their parts, but until you actually get those blueprints they aren't worth discussing here in the early game.

    • Finally, the other one is relying on certain characteristics of planets that you just might not find at all such as Abandoned Buildings for Whispering Eggs or Dinosaur Bones. Or Storm Crystals on Extreme weather planets. I do cover some of these below - but also should be taken in context of winning the lottery – you're seldom in control of having these things available to you.

I haven't found anything more consistent in the first 10 hrs of play to make more money than just by spelunking in caves and selling off Salvaged Data. Again the point of this post is to be as consistent as possible, as well things that just make life easier starting out.

    GENERAL TIPS

You can switch between 1st and 3rd person views

Press up on the D-pad for the Quick menu, then go to "Utilities" and then you can switch. Also applies to being on foot or in a starship. Took me a long time before I realized this was possible.

Don't hoard common resources in your exosuit/ship.

Some are so plentiful you only need to mine it when you need it instead of wasting a storage slot for something more valuable. Discard it from your exosuit/starship where you have a small numbers.

    The commons ones are:

    • Ferrite Dust (from rocks)

    • Carbon (mined from plant life)

    • Di-Hydrogen (from blue crystals on ground. If you get really lazy you can use a Portable Refiner to turn Tritium -> Di-Hydrogen at a rate of 5:1). You should turn Di-Hydrogen into Launch Fuel and keep a slot stacked in your starship for this only.

    • Sodium (picked from certain plans)

    • Cobalt (mined with Terrain Manipulator)

    • Copper (mined with Terrain Manipulator)

    • Gold (from shooting Asteroids)

    • Silver (from shooting Asteroids)

    • Tritium (from shooting Asteroids – leave this in a slot in your starship to keep your Pulse engine topped up)

    • Silicon Carbonate (from digging with the Terrain Manipulator)

With the exception of the elements that come from asteroids - all the other elements will show up either from your scanner or visor, and can always be "found" if you need them on a planet.

Keep a single slot stashed full of the following to keep you moving

    Exosuit

    • Oxygen for your Life Support. Some plant life will provide this.

    • Carbon for your Mining Tool. Most plant life will provide this. Later use the Portable Refiner to keep a single slot stashed with Condensed Carbon, instead of normal Carbon.

    • Sodium for your Hazard Protection. Some plant life will provide this. Later use the Portable Refiner to keep a single slot stashed with Sodium Nitrate, instead of just normal Sodium.

    Starship

    • Starship Launch Fuel (crafted from 20x Di-Hydrogen + 1x Metal Plating (from 40x Ferrite Dust))

    • Tritium

    • Portable Refiner

Early on you're going to randomly find lots other extra elements like Ammonia and Diorite - but you won't have a use for them until much later - so either sell off or discard them to keep your slots free for more useful/valuable items.

Use sprint-melee-jetpack to move quickly on foot

A combination of Sprint, melee, jetpack hop, Sprint, melee, jet pack hop, etc. helps move you really quickly on foot. The overall speed covering a distance this way is somehwere in between walking and spriting - and this becomes essential when going up inclined terrain.

You'll need to use jet pack immedaitely after hitting melee.

    MONEY MAKING TIPS

The best sell-value-to-slot ratio vs ease-of-finding in the first 10 hrs

You'll soon see that some items sell really well compared to others, however there is a limit to how much items can be stacked in one slot. Additionally there are some great high value items that are really difficult to find vs some reasonably valuable items that could be obtained faster and with less effort. This list is just my thoughts on which items are worth maxing slots out early game for sale. Of course, this doesn't consider price fluctuations in each system's economy. The key thing to consider here is what is what most consistant.

    TL;DR (Tool Long; Didn't Read)

    1. Sell "Salvaged Data". They are used to unlock some blueprints for bases and construction items. Find "Buried Technology Modules". They will show up in your Visor as a white shield with a Wifi symbol, and you will need to use the Terrain Manipulator (early multi-tool module) to dig them out. You will need a few of these Salvaged Data Modules to get through a tutorial mission on base building - but after that they are easy to find on most planets and sell for a great price of 50,000 units each.

    2. Get the Terrain Manipulator for your Multi-tool. Go cave exploring and look for Relics, Humming Sacs, etc. These are denoted by <III> when you use your Visor and will only show up if you're close enough to them (~200u with default Visor). It's easy enough to tunnel your way through the ground with the Terrain Manipulator toward it - instead of trying to find a cave entrance.

    3. Shoot asteroids. You can get a lot of Silver this way after you've managed to get into orbit.

TS;WR (Too Short; Want to Read)

I've listed all the items here from best to worst IMO.

    • From Buried Technology Modules (Easy to find with Scanning Visor)
    Item Units per slot
Salvaged Data (15x 50,000.0) 750,000 Units per slot
    • From shooting asteroids (Easy to find after fixing engines and going to orbit, but gets tedious)
    Item Units per slot
    Platinum (9999x 505) 5,049,495
    Gold (9999x 353) 3,529,647
    Silver (9999x 186) 1,859,814

*(Note: You're most likely to find Silver or Tritium)*

    • From Subterranean Relics (Reasonable to find <III> with Visor if you're close enough, and usually grouped)
    Item Units per slot
    Vortex Cube (5x 24,750.0) 123,750
    Albumen Pearl from Humming Sac/Eggs (5x 9,025.0) 45,125
    TetraCobalt (5x 6,150.0) 30,750

*(Note: Use the Terrain Manipulator to dig diagonally down*)

    • From green Damaged Containers and Monoliths (Reasonable to find containers, but randomly obtained items means this is not consistent, singular)
    Item Units per slot
    Vy'Keen Effigy (5x 24,750.0) 123,750 Units per slot
Gek Relic (5x 23,375.0) 116,875 Units per slot
Korvax Casing (5x 22,000.0) 110,000 Units per slot
    GekNip (5x 20,625.0) 103,125 Units per slot
Korvax Convergance Cube (5x 13,063.0) 65,315 Units per slot
    Vy'keen Dagger (5x 11,688.0) 58,440 Units per slot

*(Note: The above have later uses of finding portals and improving your standing with a race but in the eraly game this isn't a big deal as you can always improve your standing in other ways such as taking on missions)*

    • From Abandoned Buildings (Tricky to Find, and then to obtain - but always worth the effort)
    Item Units per slot
Larval Core from Whispering Eggs (5x 69,875.0) 349,375 Units per slot

*(Note: Usually grouped and in clusters and you will be attacked by Biological Horrors when you pick up one. There are a lot of tricks online to dealing with this - my fave is just use the Terrain Manipulator to dig under the Whispering Eggs and the entire building. Build a base computer, and then start placing a floating floor between the now floating original building and the actual ground. When you go for the Larval Core the Biological Horrors, will drop through the floor you have placed leaving you safe to pick up the Larval Cores. The Biological Horrors will not spawn on you placed floors, and will drop through. ^(You will need to pick up the Larval Cores quick before they disappear.)* ^ ^

    • From Ancient Data Structures (Difficult to find)
    Item Units per slot
Drop Pod Coordinate Data 85,000.0 each Unlikely to find multiples

*(Note: Not recommended for sale as this will lead you to an exosuit upgrade in conjunction with a signal booster that you will want to keep, and use yourself)* ^

    • From "Extreme" Weather Planets with Storms (Difficult to find Extreme Weather planet, and have storm occurring)
    Item Units per slot
Storm Crystals (5x 129,150.0) 645,750 Units per slot (Use Visor during storm)

    OTHER TIPS

    Spend your Units wisely

There's a lot you can buy, but here is what I think made sense when starting out.

    • Critical Priority - Buy Exosuit upgrades and install modules. You will always have your exosuit and you will always be using it - passively abilities that will help to improve the Life Support systems are a must. Buy S or A class upgrades and slots only at space stations and always go for Drop Pods if you can find them. Every time you visit a brand new space station for the first time you can buy on slot to expand you exosuit – generally "buy" the cheapest slot across your Exosuit's General/Tech/Cargo tabs. When you find a Drop Pod, and get the exosuit upgrade – use to get a slot in the most expensive slot (I.e . Cargo) as this will be for free.

    • High Priority - Improve your Multi-Tool mining ability, you will use it a lot, then get S class scanning upgrades. This is because this will give you a bonus of up to 9999% (yes that's 4 nines) units when you scan plants or creatures.

    • Medium Priority - Get a larger ship with more slots. The best way to do this is to buy one - and not to try to bring a crashed one up to service. I found a crashed 30 slot class B fighter and added it to my collection. However when you are starting out, it is such a ball-ache to try to fix the bloody thing. The systems that need repairing are simple enough, but with an insane amount of resources required to fix other things (350x Chromatic Metal at a time!) the time I lost trying to repair it I could have just tried to make another 1 million units and then buy a ship out right at a Trading Post. Just claim the ship, and repair the the launcher and engine so you can then summon it to your location later, and keep your original ship.

To buy a ship, wait at a space station or trading outpost, and then use your visor on the ships that land to see is class (not so important in the early game, as you can always pay to upgrade) and its slots. A fighter with 30 slots will be very useful.

    • Medium Priority - Get a Freighter. You'll have the opportunity to get a free one after a few warp jumps when you save it from Raiders - just make sure you don't accidently shoot it. The first freighter offered is usually rubbish. So you can save the ship from pirates, land on it, talk to the captain and just accept the money. After several warps the save the freighter event will reoccur for you again. Also, if you have to fend off 8 or 10 pirates chances are the freighter will be a good one, if you have to fend of 4 or 6 then chances are the freighter will be of a lower class/smaller slots.

    • Low Priority - Getting a new Multi-Tool. You should definitely get a new multi-tool where it offers up as many slots as possible – I was lucky enough to find with a class B 22 slot rifle that has done everything I needed it to do for about 2m units.

    • Low Priority - Base Building. With exception of Building teleporters, I didn't have enough tech or blueprints early enough to warrant a base for mining or farming. You will of course need to build a base to carry on with some missions, but that can be dealt with later.

Build a Base Computer Under/Adjacent to a Trading Outpost

You're going to have to build a base at some point as a tutorial mission, might as well build it here where you have 7 landing pads for ships (making trade and buying ships a straight forward as you will have an influx of ships all the time). You'll also build a teleporter here as part of a tutorial mission - and it makes it pretty easy to then treat the Trading Post a used Starship dealership you can access any time.

Plus using the Galactic Terminal should get you better sell prices that compared to the Space Station terminals.

Move your fixed modules in your exosuit/starship, to the Technology tab

You can pick up and move modules to other tabs. Things like the Photon Cannon should be moved to the Technology tab in the Starship - as this then frees up a slot in the General tab for other items.

    Always talk with everyone

Learn words and practice the language - the practice words can net you gifts from the aliens that relate to what you said, such as Nanites and Units.

Always Analyse and break open Geodes

It's a gamble as to how many resources you will get out of it, but from my limited experience the contents sellable value is usually higher than the value of just selling the Geode alone.

When you need to force your way into a building - blow off the doors with your Starship

You will find some derelict buildings (e.g. Manufacturing Facility) and you'll see a weapons symbol on the door with a health circle encouraging you to blow it open. If you use your Multi-Tool you'll alert the local sentinels who will then come after you. On the other hand you can do a low bombing run in your Starship to blow open the doors. The Sentinels won't be able to find you. Hover about until the alert period finishes then land and enter the building...

When you exit your ship, the game autosaves - use this to Save scum to get round tricky puzzles

When you break into a building it will be in an alarm state, and there will be a terminal to interact with. You will get a puzzle or a question which is a multiple choice answer out of 3. If you get it right you will be rewarded. If you get it wrong - that's it. You can't retry. You can however load your last autosave (when you got out of your ship) and then try again until you get it right.

This may not seem right, but the clues are given in an alien language, and in the early game you will have no idea what the clue is.

Refining/Crafting for profit early is not so useful

Of the abundant elements further up this post you may be tempted to refine and craft items to sell. I would not recommend these as the time spent obtaining the materials is not going to as efficient as exploring and targeting Relics and Salvaged Data.

Later you will be able to craft valuable products and run farms – but until then don't worry too much about creating something to sell.

That's it. These are all the things that would've been great to have known before I started. I hope this will be useful for some new players out there.

    Good luck Traveller
