Always dusk! I accidentally built my new base a few degrees from the South Pole - the sun never sets, it just circles the horizon. I’m hoping HG didn’t build in axial tilt - I’d be hosed in the winter.

Creating a better exploration gameplay loop

    Posted: 03 May 2020 08:18 AM PDT

Here is a list of ideas aimed at creating a stronger exploration gameplay loop in NMS, as well as shifting the focus of multiplayer towards joint-exploration. Now we all know the game needs a variation update, but that's not what we're talking about here. This post is more focused on exploration related gameplay. Variation won't mean much if you don't have much else to do besides walk around and take in the sites. Instead, the focus here is examples of exploration related tasks that can be completed on every planet the player lands on. I'll try to break it down to make it easy for people who don't feel like reading the whole thing to get the gist of what I'm suggesting. Keep in mind this is more a list of examples to give Hello Games ideas rather than a concrete, well thought out system.

Making it easier and more interesting to discover all fauna

    • Players can find clues like footprints and dung that will help them locate fauna. Scanning a dung sample, for example, will give the player information about the creature's diet. So if the creature eats star bulb, it will most likely spawn near star bramble.
    • Players can also use clues to find out what a creature's preferred bait is before discovering the creature itself, allowing them to use the bait to lure the creature out.
    • Collecting and following clues/using bait will result in a guaranteed spawn, eliminating the boring task of aimlessly walking around for hours until that last fauna finally spawns (if it ever does). Once a creature is discovered, the clues for that creature will no longer spawn so the player can move onto the next creature to be discovered.

    Repurposing Ancient Bones

    • Ancient bones should spawn on every planet about as frequently as floating crystals and stuff like that. However, they would no longer be a simple money making method, but actual collectible items that can be used as base decorations.
    • Each planet could spawn a set of unique, procedurally generated bones that make up a complete skeleton. Once all parts of the skeleton are found, it is added to the discovery page as an extinct species that the player can rename.
    • Players can assemble the complete skeleton in their base, and sell any duplicate bones they find for units.

    Repurposing Ancient Ruins and Artifacts

    • Just like ancient bones, artifacts will now be procedurally generated base decorations as well.
    • Ancient ruins will now have more variety, so you aren't digging up the same set of ruins on each planet (same with crashed freighters).

    Discovering Lore and Planet History

    • Each planet will have its own collection of historical facts that can be collected by interacting with and digging up ancient ruins.
    • Collecting all historical facts from a planet will reward the player with nanites.
    • A "Lore" page can be added to the in-game catalog. Entries are unlocked by interacting with ruins and NPCs around the universe, allowing players to learn more about the lore behind the NMS universe, and eventually unlock all entries.

    Planet Completion

    • All planetary discoveries, flora, fauna, history, bones, etc., will contribute to the planet's discovery completion. When a planet's been 100% discovered, the player will receive a reward of some sort.
    • Players will receive an even bigger reward for fully discovering all planets in a solar system (the size of the reward will depend on the number of planets).
    • Flora and minerals will now be counted towards a total, like fauna are, so players know when they've discovered all flora and minerals. The visor could have a setting that changes whether it marks discovered/undiscovered fauna, flora, or minerals with green and red dots.

    Adding More Collectables

    • In addition to ancient bones and artifacts, planets could have more collectible items, whether they be procedurally generated or static, that the player can collect for their bases. So collectibles like "glitches" will no longer be exclusive to exotic biomes. Any biome can have collectible items.
    • Collecting eggs from creatures will allow the player to incubate the eggs, hatch them, and raise the creature, keeping it at their base in a terrarium or other enclosure.
    • Seeds can be collected from flora, allowing the player to grow plants they find in their bases.
    • Fish can be captured and added to an aquarium.

    Random Events and Encounters

    • Random events can happen when exploring a planet's surface. Some examples might include meteorite strikes, Starship crashes, UFO sightings, and sandworm attacks.
    • Players can encounter more NPCs on planet surfaces. Currently, starship crash sites will sometimes have an NPC who needs help getting their ship up and running again. This specific event can be triggered by a random crash that occurs while the player is exploring. In addition, other NPC interactions along the same lines can be added. Players can rescue NPCs from biological horrors, sentinels, wild animals, and stuff like that. Basically these encounters would look like the kind of random encounters you have with NPCs in games like GTA or Red Dead Redemption.
    • New random events and encounters could be added with future updates to keep things fresh

    More Enemy Varieties

    • Players may be ambushed by land pirates, who attack on foot, in exocraft, and exomechs. These encounters would be rare to prevent them from taking away from exploration too much.
    • Boss Battles: I mentioned sandworm attacks earlier. Hello Games once said sandworms were removed because they were "overpowered". Well, we have the exomech now, so I think it's time to reexamine them and add them and other similar encounters in as "boss battles".
    • New threats from fauna can be added, like creatures that spray poisonous gas, or spit projectiles, stuff like that.
    • Dungeon style caves could be added where there are a lot of enemies and hazards to fight through before reaching a boss battle and receiving some type of reward or unlock a discovery

    More Planetary Hazards

    • Some planets might have exceptionally high hazard levels, with extreme storms that only the exomech can handle. These would be the types of planets that produce storm crystals or activated indium, creating a better risk/reward dynamic.
    • I mentioned meteorites as a random event, but they could also come as meteorite storms on certain planets. Some planets could even be under constant bombardment. These would be high-risk planets, but the meteorites would provide high-value resources.
    • Some planets might have volcanic gas, lava, deadly insect swarms, and things like that.

*Note: some of these changes aimed at adding more challenge might only apply to survival mode so that people who are only in it for a chill, exploration experience don't have to deal with such things. This is probably a more decisive subject, so be sure to share your opinions below.

Refocusing multiplayer and weekend events on joint exploration

    • When in a group, discoveries are shared among players. So if a player discovers a creature, all members of the group will discover it as well, allowing for joint exploration.
    • The various exploration tasks mention earlier can be incorporated into the Nexus. For example, a nexus mission might read: "Find all fauna on a planet" or "Assemble a complete skeleton". This will allow for players to explore together and unlock quicksilver with more interesting tasks than "kill 10 hazardous plants".
    • Weekly events can revolve around joint exploration. The way I see this working is when a player joins an event, they are put into a lobby. When a minimum number of players is reached, some extra time is allowed for people to join, then everyone is transported to an undiscovered planet. Then everyone works on completing that planet's discoveries, with progress being shared among the group until the planet is 100% discovered. This isn't to say this is what the weekend event should be every week, I think there should be a variety of events, but it might be cool some weeks.
    • A "community museum" could be added to the anomaly where players can share discoveries and pictures taken with photo mode.

That's pretty much everything. The main idea behind it all is to add more exploration related tasks into the game to make exploration the focus of the minute to minute gameplay. The goal is also to make joint-exploration the focus of multiplayer, instead of mundane tasks like collecting resources or killing X number of enemies. Let me know what you guys think. Is there anything here you like/dislike? Anything you'd like to add?
